NHL Stenden Hogeschool Academie Technology & Innovation

The Technology & Innovation department of NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences in the location of Emmen is looking for an

International Lecturer / coordinator Green Chemistry

0,8 FTE

Would you like to make a substantial contribution to both the quality of education in the Northern Netherlands and the social mission of higher professional education? Are you the link between education and the professional field?

Who are we looking for
We are looking for a colleague with knowledge and expertise in the field of chemistry to contribute to the development, implementation and execution of a new international bachelor track in chemistry.

Where will you be working
The Life Science team in Emmen is responsible for two bachelor programmes: Chemistry and Biology & Medical Laboratory research. The relatively small team of around 10 people works closely together to train and coach the students to become professional researchers and technicians. In Emmen and the larger region in the Northern Netherlands there is a thriving industry in polymers. We work together with education, research and industry to stimulate the transition to a circular economy, specifically to innovate polymer-based materials to make them renewable and/or biodegradable and enhance their qualities for specific uses. The current bachelor Chemistry is a top rated four year Dutch program, that already focusses strongly on these topics, for instance with a minor Circular Plastics. Next to that, together with the University of Applied Sciences Windesheim, we organize a joint degree Master program called Polymer Engineering, which is a crossover between chemistry and engineering. Industries are eager for more and new talented employees with this expertise to innovate their products and processes. With the current small student numbers it is a struggle to meet these demands. With a new international track on Green Chemistry we strive to enhance the influx of new staff to fuel the innovation power in the Northern Netherlands.

What you will be doing
We are looking for an international colleague or a colleague with substantial experience abroad to reinforce the team with the development, implementation and execution of an international (English) track in Chemistry. This means the tasks and responsibilities are divers and are categorised into at least three roles: contributing to the development of the international curriculum, coordinate the organization of this new track and you would be one of the Lecturers in this new track. A little bit more about the three roles

Developer
The actual development of the whole curriculum will be coordinated by the standing curriculum committee of the bachelor team. You will contribute to parts of this curriculum and add your own experience and expertise. Although the curriculum focusses on green chemistry including themes like circular plastics and (waste)water treatment processes  , it is still a broad bachelor's degree in chemistry. The expertise you bring to the table does not have to be related to this topic, but at least to applied chemistry. As an international yourself you help us represent the international voice of students who come to a foreign country and have different needs in their study track and community building.

Coordinator
A new track requires a lot of arranging, you would be the cooperative frontrunner who ensures that everything runs smoothly. This can consist of for instance writing instruction documents, setting up the electronic learning environment, developing and executing an intake protocol, keep in touch with the student administration, organizing an introduction week etc. Also, when the first students come, you would be the first point of contact, the host for these students and their study coach. This seems a lot, but we expect the first groups to be small. You will do this as part of a team that has experience with all these things for the Dutch groups and there are other departments in Emmen that have experience with international groups that you can help you on your way.

Lecturer
Through our educational courses, the student develops into an innovative professional. Your role as a Lecturer is to guide students during this development. You provide education in Chemistry. This education consists of giving lectures, workshops, practicals and supervising projects that often revolve around socially relevant issues. You will also guide students during their internship and graduation and when conducting practice-oriented research. You might be teaching some courses for the Dutch groups as well, in the higher years, or depending on your Dutch skills also in the first and second year.

Applicant profile

  • You have a relevant master's degree related to the field of Chemistry.
  • You have several years of relevant work experience in higher education.
  • You have didactic skills and have a good idea of the specific characteristics of higher professional education.
  • You are in possession of the basic teaching qualification (BDB) or are willing to obtain it.
  • You have several years of experience in an international environment
  • You are a team player.
  • You have a growth-mindset and have highly developed conceptual skills.
  • You can structure your own work well in a dynamic environment.
  • You recognize yourself in the terms: strong communicator, open-minded, flexible, enterprising and analytical.
  • You have excellent organizational skills.
  • You are fluent in English.
  • If you have a basic understanding of Dutch this would be a plus, otherwise willing to learn.
